Interior Health provides a range of Laboratory services. Laboratory Departments include:

  • Accessioning: is responsible for blood collection, the receipt of laboratory specimens, the processing of specimens prior to testing, preparing specimens for shipment to referral centers.


  • Microbiology: conducts testing on blood, body fluids, tissue and swabs from various body locations for the detection of bacteria, fungus, viruses and/or parasites.

  • Pathology: this discipline provides Frozen Section diagnosis, Surgical Pathology, and Autopsy Pathology of body tissue on site.

  • Chemistry: provides the testing of blood, urine and body fluids. The scope of tests is very broad, and includes the measurement of numerous analytes, hormones and/or drugs.

  • Hematology: provides the testing of blood, body fluids and bone marrow. Coagulation studies monitor anticoagulant use and specialized testing is performed to determine clotting or bleeding disorders.

  • Transfusion Services: provides blood typing and product compatibility testing. This department also conducts investigations on infant and maternal blood for potential blood group incompatibilities.
