    General Lab

    STAT
    • The highest priority possible for a life threatening medical emergency.
    • Request must be ordered by the attending physician.
    • Results will be available less than 60 minutes from receipt of the specimen.
    URGENT
    • Requests are processed as soon as possible.
    • Results will be available within 4 hours from receipt of the specimen.
    ROUTINE
    • Requests are processed in a timely manner.
    • If not indicated as urgent, requests are processed as routine.
    • Turnaround time varies with type of request and performing site.
    STANDING ORDERS
    • Requests for daily, weekly, or monthly testing are ordered over a specified time.
    • Expire after 12 months from initial request.
    • Physician’s office will be notified when standing order has expired.

    Microbiology

    Timeframes for receiving a report are as follows:

    Routine C&S
    • 24hr preliminary report on any culture that is growing a potential pathogen(s)
    • 24hr for negative urine cultures
    • 48hr after specimen is cultured for final report on most specimens

    Special C&S Requests
    • 5-10 days for final Anaerobe report

    Blood Cultures
    • 5 days for final NO GROWTH reports
    • Immediate telephone notification of POSITIVE Blood Cultures is made as well as a written preliminary report

    Chlamydia or GC (by DNA-amplification)
    • HSA specific

    Ova & Parasites
    • HSA specific

    Mycology (Fungal)
    • Preliminary reports issued on all significant isolates
    • 3 weeks for NEGATIVE report for dermatophyte examination (skin, hair, nails).Performed at Royal Inland Hospital
    • 6 weeks for NEGATIVE report for systemic fungi (CSF, body fluids, etc)-performed at BCCDC
    • 8 weeks or more for POSITIVE mycology identification

    Mycobacteria (TB or Acid Fast Bacilli)
    • Immediate telephone notification of POSITIVE smear
    • SMEAR:1 week for NEGATIVE report
    • 1 week preliminary report
    • CULTURE:8 weeks minimum for NEGATIVE report
    • Up to 8 weeks for identification and susceptibility on POSITIVE cultures

    Pathology and Cytology

    72 hours for routine testing
